FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What can I expect from a Behavioral Health visit?
During your first visit, you can expect your Behavioral Health provider to ask you about physical symptoms you are experiencing, emotional difficulties you are having, daily behaviors you engage in, and how all of these may be connected. Your provider will ask questions to help guide the conversation, so you don’t have to come prepared with anything specific to share. You will also be asked to fill out a few questionnaires about your symptoms, feelings, and behaviors. After the first couple of visits, you and your provider will decide together on a plan for how to manage the difficulties you are struggling with.
How long is a Behavioral Health visit?
You can expect your first visit to last between 30 and 60 minutes. Your follow-up visits will last between 20 and 30 minutes.
What is the usual timeframe for working with my Behavioral Health provider?
Behavioral Health treatment plans are typically created on a 6-month cycle, and visits are typically every 2 to 4 weeks.
Your provider will check in with you at every visit to see how you are progressing towards your goals and will decide with you when the goals have been attained.
Some patients complete treatment before 6 months, and others choose to continue after 6 months.
Is my information kept confidential?
Your information is kept in your medical record and is viewable only by NEVHC care team members, including your Primary Care provider. You must give permission for your information to be shared with anyone outside of NEVHC, excluding legally mandated releases. If you are enrolled in a treatment program, NEVHC will comply with all legal requirements to protect your information and will get your permission to share it if requested.
Your Behavioral Health provider will make every effort to keep your information confidential. However, like all providers, your provider may need to report information about child abuse or about someone who poses a danger to themselves or others.
Will I be prescribed medication?
Our Behavioral Health providers do not prescribe medication. If you are interested in medication as a treatment option, you may discuss this with your Behavioral Health provider or your NEVHC Primary Care provider. Medication management is available within the Behavioral Health department and through most insurance plans, and your provider can help you get connected with this service.
What if I am having a crisis?
Behavioral Health providers are not on-call and cannot provide crisis support. If your emergency is life threatening, please call 911. For urgent mental health support, you may call your health insurance’s behavioral health hotline or the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health hotline (800) 854- 7771.
For non-urgent needs, you may call your Behavioral Health provider at his/her extension or call the Behavioral Health department at (818) 270-9740 directly. Your provider will return your call as soon as possible.
Is there a charge for Behavioral Health services?
NEVHC accepts most insurances and is a provider for the Carelon, MHN, Blue Cross, and Molina Medi-Cal networks. If you are uninsured, NEVHC offers a sliding fee discount program.
NEVHC works with patients to ensure they get needed services and will consider special circumstances for patients experiencing hardship.
Substance Use Disorder Education
Substance use disorder (SUD) is a complex, widespread issue that can impact anyone. NEVHC provides programs to help people overcome substance abuse. We believe anyone experiencing SUD should have equal access to care and early intervention.

MAT PROGRAM
We offer Medications for Addiction Treatment (MAT) for adults addicted to opioids, stimulants, and/or alcohol. MAT is a SUD treatment that combines medication with behavioral therapy to help patients recover from an addiction.
The medications reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms, helping patients stay in treatment and decrease their use of drugs or alcohol.
Both individual counseling and group counseling are available to patients. Combining medication and counseling provides the best outcome for patients, making it more likely for them to successfully achieve and maintain sobriety.

DUI PROGRAM
NEVHC’s DUI (Driving Under the Influence) program provides education and counseling to help participants understand the dangers and consequences of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
DUI clients are referred by the courts and must complete one of the following: a six-week, three-month, six-month, nine-month, or 18-month program. This education and counseling must be done to complete a DUI sentence and, in many cases, it is required by the California DMV to reinstate a driver’s license.
By building trust with counselors and participating in group therapy and individual counseling, participants address the underlying issues contributing to their substance use.
DUI groups are offered in-person, as well as virtually, and bilingual groups are also an option. This is a fee-for-service program and the cost depends upon the length of the program imposed by the court.
We also offer the DUI MAT Integration Outreach Project, creating a supportive pathway to recovery for individuals in our DUI program. If you choose to participate, our team will provide a substance use disorder (SUD) prescreening and connect you to medication-assisted treatment (MAT) services. By caring for both the behavioral and physical aspects of addiction, we aim to give you the best chance at lasting recovery and reducing the risk of future DUI incidents.
