Why is National HIV Testing Day observed?
Every year, on June 27 we observe National HIV Testing Day to encourage people to get tested for HIV, know their status and get connected to care and treatment if they test positive.
What is HIV?
HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. HIV is a virus that damages your immune system. It is spread when you come in contact with certain bodily fluids of a person with HIV. It is most commonly spread through unprotected sex or through sharing needles.
If left untreated, HIV can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).
Who should be tested for HIV?
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 be tested for HIV at least once in their lifetime.
People in higher risk groups should be tested more often. To check if you are at higher risk click here.
