The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has announced that public schools will remain closed through May 1, 2020. LAUSD has partnered with PBS SoCal to provide educational programming to their students during this period.
Because many LAUSD students rely on school for at least one of their daily meals, LAUSD also offers a network of 60 Grab and Go food centers.
The Los Angeles Public Libraries are currently closed, and are not charging late fees for overdue books and materials.
Los Angeles County Makes Announcement on Schools Reopening
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has announced that the case threshold needed to reopen schools for in-person learning will be reached on February 16, 2021. All schools that intend on reopening need to submit safety plans to the county’s and state’s Department of Public Health before being allowed to officially reopen. Read the full announcement here.
Safe School for All Plan: returning to in-person learning
Last week California Governor Newsom announced the Safe Schools for All Plan, which lays out a plan for school children to return to school for in-person learning. The plan is built on four primary safety measures, including testing, PPE, contact tracing and vaccinations. The plan aims for students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade to return to school in phases beginning in February with older students returning at some point during the spring if conditions allow. LAUSD Fall Enrichment Virtual Classes
From September 8-15, registration will be open for LAUSD’s Fall Enrichment classes. These fun and exciting virtual courses are available for all LA Unified students, K-12 grade, and will be offered after school and/or on Saturdays from September 21 through mid-December. LAUSD Counseling Hotline
If your child needs to speak with a Los Angeles Unified School District counselor, they can do so from home during #COVID-19. Call (213) 241-3840 to reach a counselor, weekdays from 6am to 6pm.
COVID College Connect Program
LA Compact in partnership with Mayor Garcetti is offering the COVID College Connect Program, to help 2020 high school graduates with financial aid, FAFSA and Dream Act applications, and to assist with the transition to college life during COVID-19.

One Degree’s COVID-19 Resource Guide
One Degree’s COVID-19 Resource Guide is updated Monday – Friday by 2 PM. The resource guide is a collaborative effort between Cal State LA, Los Angeles Department of Health Services, One Degree, and other community organizations and members who are committed to the well-being and health of our community. The resource guide includes educational resources and is available in English and Spanish.
Low-cost Internet Services for Los Angeles Residents
The City of Los Angeles has partnered with internet providers to offer low-cost broadband and wifi offers for school age (K-12) and/or college student households, healthcare workers, educators and subscribers living in public and affordable housing. Get connected here.
PBS SoCal: Educational Programming
PBS SoCal has partnered with the LAUSD to offer broadcast programming and accompanying digital resources for at-home learning. This educational programming is free, and links to programming can be found at:
Los Angeles Public Library
Although LA County’s 72 library locations are closed, The LA Public Library is still offering a large selection of digital services including:
- ebooks and audiobooks
- tv, movies and music
- online classes
- newspapers and magazines.
Their web-based Ask a Librarian service is also available, and librarians can still be reached by calling (213) 228-7272.
The LA Public Library is not charging late fees for overdue materials during its closure.

William S. Hart Union High School District
The Hart Union High School District has closed schools and is offering Distance Learning for students. Visit the Hart Union High School District website to learn how distance learning works and about how to get free or reduced WiFi and/or chromebooks for students.
The Saugus Union School District
The Saugus Union School District’s COVID-19 webpage provides a list of food centers for children (18 years and younger) to pick up free meals during the school closure. To access their webpage, click here.
Newhall School District
Schools in the Newhall School District are closed until May 5th. Visit the Newhall School District website to find Santa Clarita based child care options as well as food distribution centers for students and families.
