Jorge Mosqueda had been struggling. The twenty-eight-year-old had been battling diabetes and other health issues for a long time. Last October, his A1C level reached 16.5, which is extremely high.*
It wasn’t easy, but working with Dr. Babak Baradar-Bokaie and the dedicated staff at NEVHC’s Pacoima Health Center, Jorge began making remarkable progress. With the support of his parents, he began exercising and limiting his sodas. By January 2018, his A1C dropped to 10.3, showing extraordinary efforts. By March, Jorge managed a 6.5 A1C, showing his strength and determination, and achieved his goal. He is a special patient.
At NEVHC, when a patient manages to lower his A1C to below 7 in a 3 month period, the staff celebrates this accomplishment with a “code sugar”. “Code sugar” is announced throughout the clinic, and the staff joins FMCC’S and medical providers in a special chant to recognize this success. The patient is awarded a certificate and his or her photograph is displayed.
Congratulation to Jorge, and his parents! A job extremely well done!
*The A1C test is a blood test that provides information about a person’s average levels of blood glucose, also called blood sugar, over the past 3 months. A 16.5 A1C meant that his estimated average glucose would have been around 427mg/dl. Normal blood sugar levels range from 70 mg/dl to 120 mg/dl.
