This year, all individuals registered to vote in California will receive a vote by mail ballot to use in November’s general election. Voting by mail is new for many of us, and you may have questions about mail-in ballots and how to ensure they are received and counted by Election Day.

First Things First: Why Vote?
So much depends on our vote!
- • It’s always important to vote, but this year’s general election will have an especially strong impact, as we will elect the next President of the United States, members of Congress, State Legislators and more.
- • 2020’s general election will truly guide the future of public health in America, during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond it.
- The officials we elect work for us.
- • Whether you wish to support a future of health care for all, to lend your voice for the social services that uplift our communities, or you want a particular public servant to represent you in Congress, as a legislator or as President, the answer is the same: Consider your values and vote from the heart.
Register to Vote in the November Election!
- • It all starts with registering! November 3, 2020 is General Election Day, but you should aim to register no later than October 19, 2020. You can check your registration status and register to vote today at https://registertovote.ca.gov/.
So You’ve Registered To Vote: Now What?
- • In California, every registered voter will receive a mail-in ballot so that they can vote while staying safe at home. These ballots will arrive no later than 29 days before Election Day. Be sure your mailing address is current and correct here.
- • Don’t forget: Your vote must be postmarked by Election Day, November 3, to be counted.
I’ve Heard That USPS is Delayed. Should I Still Mail My Vote In?
- • It is true that the US Postal Service is experiencing some delays nationwide. USPS recommends that voters mail their ballots one week before election day. You can drop your ballot off in a USPS collection (mail) box.
- • You can also drop your ballot off in a secure ballot drop-off box or at your local voting center. Both Ballot box and voting center locations are listed thirty days prior to Election Day here.
I’d Rather Vote in Person. May I?
- • Yes. California voters can vote in person at their polling place, which can be found here.
