The summer season is quickly approaching; the weather is getting warmer and the days are longer. June 21 marks our farewell to spring! While many of us relate summer with outdoor activities, let’s remember to take precautions to keep potential seasonal health risks away. Have fun in the sun and follow the CDC’s Tips for a Healthy Summer to keep you and your family safe.

Temporary Closure of Rainbow Dental Center

We regret to announce that NEVHC’s Rainbow Dental Center in Canyon Country is temporarily closed. The closure is due to a car accident that caused a structure fire after midnight on June 12. We are grateful that our staff were not on site when the accident occurred, and we hope the passengers in the car will recover from their injuries.

We are relocating our Rainbow Dental staff where they can continue to care for patients. Patients with upcoming appointments will be contacted and rescheduled to another NEVHC dental center.

Please call (818) 270-9555 to schedule an appointment at any of our other dental locations. For a complete list of NEVHC dental locations, please visit: nevhc.org/dental

We have been planning to relocate the dental center to a larger location in 2023; this unfortunate event has accelerated those plans. We will keep you up to date with relocation details when they become available.

NEVHC Staff Donate to Patient Programs

Last month, we concluded our yearly ‘I Support You’ (ISU) employee giving campaign, which supports many of our patients’ favorite health programs. The ISU provides an opportunity for our own staff to donate to patient programs that no longer receive funding from grants. This year, staff raised nearly $52,000! The staff’s support this year will allow six patient programs to run in 2023:

  • Home Blood Pressure Monitor Program – provides home blood pressure monitors for qualifying patients with uncontrolled blood pressure

  • Breathe Easy Asthma Program – provides health education classes to strengthen patients’ self management of their asthma
  • Homeless Hygiene Kits – provides hygiene kits, essential clothing items and healthy snacks to patients experiencing homelessness
  • Breast Cancer Awareness – reminds and encourages women to schedule their annual mammograms
  • Reach out and Read – provides age-appropriate, English, Spanish and bilingual books to children at well-child exams to help children become reading ready prior to entering school
  • WIC Breastfeeding Program – promotes breastfeeding among WIC participants by providing a nursing bra or nursing apron

We hope that next year you’ll enjoy any of these patient programs you may be interested

in!

NEVHC Receives Target: BP Silver Achievement Award

We’re excited to announce that we have been recognized by the American Heart Association (AHA) and American Medical Association (AMA) with a ‘Target: BP Silver Achievement Award’ for our commitment to improving blood pressure measurements among our patients! Target: BP is a national collaboration between AHA and AMA to reduce the number of Americans suffering from heart attacks and strokes each year. If you are interested in learning about health education for chronic diseases like blood pressure, you may contact our Health Education department by calling 818-270-9508 or emailing HealthEd@nevhc.org. We hope to see you in our next workshops!

Media Coverage: NEVHC on Telemundo 52

If you haven’t heard, California recently passed a new law called Older Adult Expansion. The law went into effect last month, and expands full-scope Medi-Cal coverage to low-income individuals who are 50+ years old, regardless of immigration status. Our teams were preparing for this historical moment by urging community members and patients to apply to Medi-Cal. Telemundo 52 visited our San Fernando Health Center to meet with NEVHC Program Manager Jiovanni Perez, to discuss the new opportunities this law presents, and how we’re helping community members apply for Medi-Cal. Staff Spotlight: Elizabeth Sanchez

For this edition, we’re thrilled to spotlight NEVHC Breast and Cervical Cancer Case Manager Elizabeth Sanchez, LVN today. Managing the care for patients who have been newly diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer, she guides them from the moment they receive their diagnosis up until they reach the remission phase. As a case manager, Elizabeth makes sure that patients are receiving continuity of care with their NEVHC primary physician, along with specialty services like oncology. She provides comfort, ease and resources to patients and their families during uncertain times. Elizabeth states she enjoys being able to give back to her community and help guide women facing health challenges.
