cOVID-19 VACCINES
The CDC recommends COVID-19 vaccines to protect against severe illness. Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna are the preferred vaccines.
NEVHC offers the Moderna and Pfizer vaccine to the following individuals:
- Pfizer: 6 months of age and older
- Moderna: 6 months of age and older
Note: All vaccines are free and available to anyone regardless of immigration status.
cOVID-19 BOOSTER sHOTS
The CDC recommends booster shots to eligible individuals to enhance protection against severe COVID-19 illness.
FIRST BOOSTER:
Who is eligible?
- 18 years of age and older
- 5 – 17 years of age and older who received Pfizer as their initial vaccine series
NOTE: Children who received the Moderna primary series do not need a booster at this time.
When to get your first booster?
5 months after final dose: Most children/teens/adults
3 months after final dose: Individuals who are immunocompromised
2 months after final dose: Individuals who received Johnson & Johnson
SECOND BOOSTER:
Who is eligible?
- 50 years of age and older
- 12 – 49 years of age and immunocompromised
- 18 – 49 years of age and received Johnson & Johnson for initial vaccine and 1st booster.
When to get your second booster?
4 months after first booster

cOVID-19 VACCINE FAQ
No: vaccines help our immune systems identify the virus and fight back through building immunity. Symptoms such as a fever or body aches are normal, and are a sign that your body is building immunity to the virus. Symptoms typical only last for roughly 24 hours.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), CDC and Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) review evidence from clinical trials provided by the vaccine manufactures such as Pfizer and Moderna. Thousands of people of all ages and ethnicities were tested as part of the vaccine trials. Side effects continue to be monitored by these organizations.
No: Vaccines typically take a few weeks to reach their full strength. This means that even after getting the vaccine you will still need to follow COVID-19 safety guidelines such as wearing a mask, staying at least 6 feet apart, and washing your hands regularly to protect yourself from COVID-19.
Yes: studies have shown that while unlikely, it is possible to contract the virus more than once, so it is important to get vaccinated even if you’ve already been sick with COVID-19. As of now, we don’t know how long the immunity benefits of the vaccine will last. If you’ve recently been infected with COVID-19, do not get the vaccine until your symptoms have subsided and you’ve met the criteria to discontinue isolation.
Studies from the CDC show that reinfection is highly uncommon within 90 days of initially being infected, so a person may delay getting the vaccine for 90 days after recovering from COVID-19 if they wish.
No: the primary vaccines available are mRNA vaccines, and it’s impossible for these vaccines to change your DNA. The mRNA vaccine will never come into contact with the nucleus of a cell where DNA is stored.
The two main vaccines currently available from Pfizer and Moderna require two doses of the vaccine. The first dose introduces the virus to your immune system to that your body can recognize it and begin building immunity. The second dose helps your body build even greater immunity after your body has adjusted to the first dose.
COVID-19 vaccines will be given at no cost. Depending on where you receive the vaccine, you may be charged an administration fee, but the vaccine itself will be at no cost.
No: none of the vaccines currently available or in development will cause you to test positive on a COVID-19 viral test. You may test positive on some antibody tests, and these tests are used to indicate if you’ve had a previous infection. Experts are still researching how the vaccine affects the results of an antibody test.
No: studies show that, while it is unlikely, people can get COVID-19 more than once. COVID-19 affects everyone differently, and when you are sick with the virus you can easily spread it to family and friends even if you show no symptoms.

cOVID-19 TESTING FAQ
You can request to get tested for COVID-19 if you meet one of the following requirements:
• You have been exposed to a person who has tested positive for COVID-19.
• You are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
• You are getting a medical or dental procedure that requires proof that you have been tested for COVID-19.
• Traveling and require proof that you have been tested for COVID-19.

Please note:
Since the COVID-19 virus can live in your body for up to 3 months, it is not recommend that you take another COVID-19 test until 3 months AFTER your first positive test. You do not need a negative test in order to return to work.
You should schedule a second COVID-19 test if you develop new COVID-19 symptoms after you started to feel better.
The ACTIV-2 Study is a clinical trial that tests different medicines to see if they are safe and can help treat adults diagnosed with COVID-19. The study is seeking volunteers who have tested positive for COVID-19 within the last seven days and are showing symptoms. ACTIV-2 is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and lasts roughly six months.
NOTE: NEVHC health centers are not study cites. Study participants would have to travel to Northridge for the nearest study site.

Northeast Valley Health Corporation was incorporated in 1971 by a group of San Fernando Valley civic leaders who envisioned establishing a healthcare system that catered to the medical needs of the local community. They opened San Fernando Health Center in 1973 and celebrated its dedication with the late U.S. Senator Ted. Kennedy. Today, NEVHC has grown to 14 health centers in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys and continue to serve the uninsured and the medically underserved patients with limited financial resources. Nearly 70,000 patients receive medical, dental and behavioral health care at our health centers every year.
